With the end of summer came the last show of this year’s Southstreet Seaport Music Festival on Friday, August 29th. The headliner band, Joanna Gruesome, lived up to their reputation with an energized performance. The interesting tidbit about them, that they met in an anger management group, is more than just a tidbit as they process their journey their feelings through their music (and perhaps exorcise their demons through front woman, Alanna’s fierce singing.
Opening act, Big Ups, stirs punk, post-punk, metal, and indie rock into their sound stew. Singer Galarraga was all over the stage while his bandmates, Finn, Lal and Salguero, moved the tempo and sound from hard to soft and back again.
With a bitter cold wind coming off the port, I was grateful that these two band kept me chasing them with my camera with their dynamic performances.
