➡️Viral Verse is poetry about current events and issues. This particular one was inspired by various segments on Central American immigrants’ treacherous route including a podcast from Radio Amublante and Vice’s HBO show.
Indelible
as trauma lodged
in the cortex,
his memory
circles her
consciousness,
stringing knots
of regret,
poised
to storm the
translucent
veil of dreams
once she rocks
herself to sleep;
for outside the
watchful eyes of
life, he is hers.

Not much more than a rag doll
she folds east, her molted
braids sweep slowly
on top of the shoulders of an
oversized T. on the steps
to the avenue, she leans
and tucks in locking
onto me…expectantly.
I scurry and fade past
her thin eyes
with my head bowed,
to the early morning rush.
